• Volvo EX40 is the new name for the Volvo XC40 Recharge, starting with the 2025 model year
  • The Volvo C40 Recharge will also become a Volvo EC40, though not until the 2026 model year
  • The Recharge designation will also be dropped from Volvo’s plug-in hybrids

With the arrival of its new EX30 electric subcompact crossover and EX90 electric midsize SUV for the 2025 model year, Volvo has introduced a new naming strategy in which electric vehicles are designated by an “E” in their names instead of using the separate “Recharge” tag.

Under the new naming strategy, electric SUVs combine the “E” with an “X,” while electric sedans will combine the “E” with an “S,” as seen in the name of the ES90 electric midsize sedan expected later this year.

Volvo has also confirmed that electric coupes and coupe-like models will combine the “E” with a “C,” and it’s likely electric wagons will combine the “E” with a “V,” though Volvo hasn’t yet indicated whether this will be the case.

Volvo isn’t waiting until a vehicle is redesigned to apply the new naming strategy. The automaker announced on Jan. 21 that the current XC40 Recharge is being rebranded as the EX40 for the 2025 model year. It will be sold alongside the gas-powered XC40, whose name remains unchanged.

In addition to adopting a new name, the EX40 for 2025 also benefits from an increase in battery size for the Twin Motor models to 82 kwh, up from 78 kwh. The DC fast-charging rate for both the Single Motor and Twin Motor models has also been increased to 205 kw, up from 200 kw.

Pricing for the 2025 EX40 starts at $52,500, excluding destination.

In line with the new strategy, the current C40 Recharge will also be rebranded as the EC40, though not until the 2026 model year. There won’t be an EC40 for the 2025 model year, though 2024 examples of the C40 Recharge are still available, Volvo said.

Plug-in hybrid models will also stop using the “Recharge” tag starting with the 2025 model year. Instead, they will be designated by a “T8” at the end of their names, which indicates the plug-in hybrid as the most potent powertrain in the lineup still using a gasoline engine.
